How can I Focus on your Goal and blur everything else!
Focus is a matter of activation and consistency. What most
people don’t know is that focus, from a neuroscience perspective, is limited.
For example, studies show that we can focus on a major project for a maximum of
90 minutes before the law of diminishing returns kicks in. Studies also show
that when focusing on a major project, if you take a break and get out into
nature, you come back to the work more focused and ready to produce.
A lot of our world today speaks the opposite of what focus research is telling us. We glorify multi-tasking. We glorify hustle, sleeping 2 hours a night, and doing the grind. What that narrative won’t tell you is this: deep work calls for deep focus and deep focus calls for simplifying your life and shortening your goal list.
So, how do you keep yourself focused on your goal? Here are
a few tips:
Control the first hour of your day. I did a video on this.
It’s really important that you make the first hour of your day your Hour of
Power… which means no checking email or social media as soon as you wake up.
Wake up and spend the first 60 minutes doing activities that set your day up
for success. Whether that’s meditation, exercise, affirmations, yoga, deep
breathing, or journaling, take control of your day by setting the intention in
that first hour.
Write down your goals for the year every morning. It’s easy
to set a goal and forget it. The way to keep your goals front and center is to
write them down each morning. That way, as you move through the day, you have
those goals in mind and can ask yourself, “Is where I’m spending my time
getting me closer to my goal… or farther away?”
Schedule at least one focus blocks a day to work on your
biggest goal or dream. I’m a huge supporter of having no more than 3 major
goals or dreams to pursue. There simply isn’t enough time and energy to focus
on more than 3 major life goals or dreams. Make it a non-negotiable to schedule
out at least one focus block (60 - 90-minute block of time) dedicated to
working on that biggest goal or dream. Not only will you feel more confident
about your ability to achieve your dreams but you’ll make consistent progress.
The most important thing to stay focused on your goals:
belief in yourself… I mean REALLY believe. Be so convinced of your ability to
succeed that doubt doesn’t get a second of air time. Until you have absolute
certainty that you can and will achieve your goal, you’ll have a hard time
staying consistent, persistent, and on task. Self-belief is the #1 thing to
cultivate if you want to stay focused on your goals.
